Cairns, in north-east Queensland, is over 1,700 kilometres away from the state capital Brisbane. The settlement was created in 1876 as mining outpost and named after the Governer of the state, William Wellington Cairns.
Cairns has a tropical climate with a dry and wet season and monsoons between November and March. It is a very popular tourist destinationas a base for travellers wanting to visit the Great Barrier Reef (only an hour and a half away by boat) and the wet tropics.
