Melbourne
Victoria's state capital city Melbourne was first settled in 1835 and declared a city in 1847. Now a large financial and industrial centre, Melbourne is home to many of Australia's top companies and it's largest seaport.

Geelong
Geelong is the second largest city in the state of Victoria, after Melbourne. It is located on the south coast of the state to the south-west of Melbourne.

Ballarat
The city of Ballarat lies just over 100km north-west of Melbourne and is the largest inland city in the state of Victoria. It was founded in 1838 and expanded greatly in 1850 when gold was found in the surrounding area - so much so that for a time it was Victoria's largest city.

Bendigo
Bendigo, the fourth largest city in Victoria, is located in the centre of the state. It was founded in 1851 and became a city 20 years later in 1871. Officially the city was called Sandhurst after the town in the Unied Kingdom but it was changed to Bendigo in 1891.

Shepparton
Shepparton, the fifth-largest city in Victoria, is located in the north of the state, about 200 kilometres in-land from the state capital Melbourne. The settlement was first established on a miners' route in the 19th century.

Mildura
Mildura is located in north-west Victoria, approximately 550km north-west of the state capital Melbourne. Established as a settlement in 1887, Mildura became a city in 1937. The name Mildura is an Aboriginal term meaning "red sand".

Warrnambool, on the south-west coast of Victoria is at the western end of the Great Ocean Road. The name was taken from the Aboriginal name for a local volcanic hill.

Sunbury, 40 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne, is a town in it's own right as well as being a suburb of the state capital. It was established in 1836 and named after Sunbury-on-Thames in Surrey, England.
